My MacBook Was Cracked By Itself

article tags tags:

Why it cracked

I’ve had my Macbook for 6 months. I saved a lot of money because it was the last of the first generation available and it was a floor model.

I’d like to say I haven’t had any problems with my MacBook, but in June I had to replace the hard drive and today I found the third cack to the case. I felt bad that my relatively new MacBook is cracked in three places because i I keep it on the coffee table or have it in a padded laptop bag and handled it carefully. I felt bad because I thought it was somehow my fault, that is until I searched flickr for macbook + crack and found many other computers with the exact same cracks.

There is even a Flickr group called My MacBook Was Cracked By Itself out after looking around a bit that two of the cracks are cause by the magnets pressing the small ridges into the plastic and cracking the case.

Don't Burn the Books

article tags tags:,

A student told me his book had bad words in it. I asked if they were written in the book or printed by someone else. He wasn’t able to answer the question so I asked him to bring me the book.

He came back to my desk with his dictionary and showed me that it contained the word ass. I said it was okay that the words were in his dictionary, he didn’t need to use the words.

He was okay with that answer.

We Share Everything

article tags tags:,

I was reading a story to a grade 1/2 classes yesterday and read the Robert Munsch book, “We Share Everything”. I had the students reciting it along with me when the repetitive part comes in the book. So after the class has finished saying “we share everything” at least five times and we are finished the story it is time to go pick out a new book. One little boy gets up and tosses the book he had in his hand over his shoulder and runs to the dinosaur books. Another boy was pulling a dinosaur book off the shelf and he grabs it from him. I went up to him and had to tell him to let go of the other boy’s book and go back to pick up the book he threw.

I really should have made him check out We Share Everything.

Baja Baked Black Beans

article tags tags:

This makes a large batch of beans, but they can be used as a side dish, in burritos and I’ve made some very good quesadilla s with the beans, fresh tomatoes and cheese.

Ingredients

  1. 4 cups black beans, soaked overnight
  2. 1/2 bunch cilantro, coursely chopped
  3. 1 tbsp cumin seed
  4. 2 tbsp pure chile powder
  5. 1 tbsp dried oregano
  6. 6 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped
  7. 1 tbsp salt
  8. 2 tbsp chiplotle puree
  9. 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed

Procedure

  1. In a large pot, place the soaked beans, cilantro, cumin, chile powder, dried oregano, garlic, and onion. Cover with cold water by one inch. bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until beans are tender (about one hour). Add more water to keep beans covered if necessary. Add 2 tsp (10 ml) salt in the final 15 minutes of cooking.
  2. Next, pre-heat the oven to 350F. Stir the remaining ingredients onto pot. Taste the sauce and season if necessary. Carefully ladle the beans into a large glass baking dish. Place in a large baking tray (to catch spills) cover with foil and bake. After one hour, remove foil and check liquid content. If the beans are still very runny, leave them baking in the oven, and check them every 15 minutes until they reach desired consistency. Let the beans rest for 10 minutes before serving, or refrigerate and reheat as needed.

Tomato Chutney

article tags tags:

Ingredients

  1. 2 lbs unripe tomatoes (6 medium, the greener the better)
  2. 2 tbs minced fresh ginger
  3. 1 tsp mustard seeds
  4. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 1 tsp coriander (optional)
  6. 3/4 tsp salt
  7. 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  8. 1/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
  9. 1/4 cup white sugar
  10. cayenne to taste
  11. 2 tbs minced garlic

Procedure

  1. Dice the tomatoes, and place them in a medium-sized saucepan with all remaining ingredients, except the garlic
  2. Bring to a boil, lower heat, and simmer uncovered for 45 minutes or until everything is well mingled and very soft. Add garlic during the last 5 to 10 minutes of cooking. Cool, then transfer to a sterile jar with a lid, and chill.

This is a really simple recipe and and a great way to use your tomatoes you’ve harvested form the garden. the best part is that it requires unripe tomatoes, so you don’t get stuck with boxes of ripe tomatoes.

I guess one is worse than the other

article tags tags:,

Today I was called a b*tch and a p*ssy, Well maybe not a b*tch, I heard him say it and another teacher heard it too, but he said he called me a p*ssy but not a b*itch.

When I told him that I wasn’t the only one that heard him say it, he said there was no one around. I asked him when was that and he almost said when I called you a b*tch. I really think it was unfair of us to talk to him in the office without a lawyer. It’s just too easy.

Essential Software 2006

article tags tags:,

This isn’t a list of software released in 2006, because some of the software I have started to use isn’t new. Instead, I have made a list of software that has become essential to every computer I use in the past year. After making the list a theme of working on more than one computer but maintaining access to my files has dominated this list of software.

Launchy (free) Download
Much like Quicksilver for Mac, Launchy gives you a simple keystroke launcher for programs and documents. After having launchy installed for a week, I found myself trying to use alt-tab to launch the search for programs or documents on other people’s computers.

Foldershare (free) Download
Foldershare was acquired by Microsoft in November 2005, but that shouldn’t stop you from using this file synchronization software. I’ve tried other synchronization options but none worked as well. Besides the accuracy, another advantage of Foldershare is the ability to synchronize your date without plugging onto your home network. Because the synchronization connects your computers online, you can access your files remotely. There are Mac and Windows version of Foldershare for people that use two operating systems.

Hamachi (free) Download
Hamachi is a free VPN (Virtual Private Network) and if you spend any time away from your home, you will find the ability to connect the smae as you would if you were plugged into your home network.

Google Reader (free)
RSS and Atom feeds may still be a geeky way of viewing the web, but once you start using feeds, the ability to view many websites quickly for updates is essential. I’ve used FeedDemon in the past and it’s great, but with my time split between a desktop and laptop, I didn’t want to have to worry about synchronization. You do need a gmail account, but those are easy to find now.

MediaCoder (free) Download
I’ve tried a lot of encoders for my iPod, but finally settled on MediaCoder. While MediaCoder is very easy it use, it is still very powerful and can tackle any video or audio format you throw at it.

Tunesleeve (free) Download
Now that iTunes allows you to flip through your album covers and my iPod can display the cover art, I’ve used the iTunes store to add the cover art, but if you don’t have a credit card or you have music that isn’t available at the iTunes store, you have to add artwork manually. Since I had a lot of albums without cover art, I was happy to find Tunesleeve. Tunesleeve will search for each of albums and let you choose the best cover and save it to your iTunes database. Not really essential software as I don’t use it often, but it has save me a lot of work.

Rez' for 20 at Pizza Hut

article tags tags:

I took my class on a field trip to do some Christmas Shopping. We did a Christmas box exchange and I worried that some of them would not be able to go into town to do the shopping. I didn’t want them to have to do their shopping at the gas station, so we went to Lloydminster to shop.

We made a reservation for lunch at Pizza Hut for the buffet. Because the reservation was for the buffet, we did not receive menus. A few people decided that they did not want the buffet so they went to the front to ask for menus.

When the Educational Assistant asked for menus, the waitress asked if they were from the reservation. Because we were from a First Nations reserve, there was some confusion. The EA was a little puzzled and didn’t understand why it would matter if we were from a reservation. So she said “pardon me?” and the waitress asked it she was with the reserved tables in the corner.
